The Petrolhead Corner: The Mercedes-Benz W196R Stromlinienwagen
Mercedes-Benz and racing go hand-in-hand. After all, it’s one of the most successful manufacturers in both pre-war Grand Prix, post-war Formula 1 and Endurance Racing, birthing many legendary cars. From the very early days of motor racing, the brand has been active in all sorts of categories. It won the 1914 French Grand Prix with the Blitzen Benz, it won the Targa Florio in 1922 and 1924, and in 1931 the team was victorious in the Mille Miglia with the SSKL. After World War II, they pretty much took up where they left off, as they entered the newly formed Formula One world championship with the W196 in 1954. The team had immediate success and took home multiple wins and championships, but it was to be short-lived. The 1955 Le Mans crash saw Mercedes-Benz no other option than to withdraw from motorsports entirely, ending the W196’s career. Nevertheless, it became a true racing legend, and one of only four complete W196R Stromlinienwagens is coming up for auction, at an astr
Tudor Glamour Double Date 42mm Manufacture Movement 57100/57103 (Specs & Price)
When the name Tudor is mentioned, models such as “Black Bay” or “Pelagos” spring to mind. For sure, the brand communicated (and created) a lot on these products – which are admittedly?great watches. Today, the brand unveils a redesigned and slightly more masculine version of this watch, now equipped with a brand new version of the manufacture movement. Meet the?Tudor Glamour Double Date ref. 57100/57103.?Up until now, the Tudor?Glamour had been entirely in the shadows of the BB, Pelagos and other sports models of Tudor. It was one of those watches that didn’t really capture our attention, mainly because the brand didn’t communicate about it. However, Tudor today

Shark week kicks off today, a week devoted to the mighty apex predator of the seas whose very existence is being threatened by overfishing. As a brand closely linked to the sea, Ulysse Nardin takes its support of safeguarding sharks to the next level and will donate 1% of all sales of its shark watches to support the non-profit organisation For the Planet. It is also partnering with Sharktrust, a leading European shark conservation charity and has invited a new ambassador who knows about sharks intimately. And, as you have probably already guessed, Ulysse Nardin is releasing a limited edition of its Diver Chronograph.Shark-themed modelsSharks and Ulysse Nardin are a natural fit, harking back to the brand's strong maritime ties in the shape of marine chronometers. Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance Review (Specs & Price)
If you are a recurring reader of MONOCHROME or simply into independent watchmaking, you are probably familiar with Armin Strom and their innovative Resonance concept. Launched with the Mirrored Force Resonance in 2016, later used to regulate a dual-time watch, the brand's first Masterpiece, the second chapter in this ultra-complex series of watches has just been presented And here, resonance is used on two levels, as you'll see below. Meet the impressive Armin Strom Minute Repeater Resonance. The concept of ResonanceResonance is one of the most outstanding phenomena in all physics: two oscillating bodies in proximity influence each other and eventually synchronize. Back in the 17th?century, Christian Huygens observed the phenomenon with two of his recently invented pendulums (read our introductory article on the Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance here). Since then, resonance has fascinated many watchmakers but few worked on this concept, and even fewer mastered it. In 2016, Armin Stro
