Introducing new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph - SIHH 2017
I think we can all agree that the fastest?way to ruin an iconic watch is by completely?redesigning it. It seems that Audemars Piguet subscribes to this idea too and in fact has gone as far as to print it?out in massive letters and put it?everywhere in the design department. Don’t change the Royal Oak, it will only?end in tears and with a final result that is nowhere near as good at what you started with. Still, the market is a sucker for novelties and some fresh air is needed, from time to time. With this in mind,?Audemars Piguet introduces the Refreshed?Royal Oak Chronograph at the SIHH 2017. No?major changes of course, just some tiny little updates?to make it even more?appealing, including a?two-tone dial design.Overall, we’re talking 7 new versions of the?Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph; four versions in pink gold which are available on a matching, pink gold bracelet or an alligator strap and three versions in steel?fitted with stainless steel bracelets. The choice
A Technical Perspective - The Mighty Return of Ultra-Thin Watches
Miniaturisation has always been one of the watchmaking industry’s main objectives. With the advent of complicated watches and the development of the wristwatch, this issue became critical. Fitting multiple functions into a single movement, which has to remain wearable, requires re-imagining space. This also led to the development of ultra-thin watches, guided initially by a desire for elegance, but also in the framework of constant improvement. Popular since the 1960s but slightly forgotten during the 2000s (with the trend for large timepieces), ultra-thin watches recently made a strong comeback – a trend that has sparked open warfare between Piaget and Bvlgari – amongst others.Modern history of the ultra-thin wristwatchThe concept of the ultra-thin wristwatch is nothing new but it's Piaget and the iconic Altiplano model that bring it into the spotlight. In 1957, Piaget introduced Calibre 9P; the thinnest mechanical movement ever created, it was fitted inside a watch
Monochrome-Watches at the Monochrome Watches
Here we are, 2016 has just started and the new horological year too, meaning that the SIHH 2016 is about to open its doors and to reveal the novelties of?Richemont Group brands. This year for the very first time the SIHH also gives the floor to several independent watchmakers. Known as the?Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, the SIHH will be this year more interesting than ever before. In order to keep you updated?with everything that will be presented by the exhibiting brands, we are on the road to SIHH 2016 and will report live from the fair as of Monday morning.Like every year, the watch exhibition season starts in January with the SIHH, which focuses mainly on high-end brands owned by the Richemont Group – plus several independent brands, friend of the group (Audemars Piguet, Richard Mille, Greubel Forsey or Parmigiani). However, this year, the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie undergoes several changes. We find back the 15 major brands that are part of the s
Hands-On IWC Portugieser Chronograph Blue Panda IW371620
If there’s one watch that can be called a classic at IWC, it has to be the Portugieser Chronograph. One of the earliest models to be launched after the rebirth of the range, it succeeded the Portugieser Rattrapante with a simpler movement but almost identical design. And since its launch in 1998, with the exception of minimal design evolutions and a new movement, it hasn’t changed a bit – and for the best. Recently, however, IWC presented a new duo of Portugieser watches with Panda blue dials. And now that we’ve managed to see it in the metal, I can tell you that there’s a lot to love in what appeared at first as a negligible upgrade.?Let’s start with a brief historical reminder. The original IWC Portugieser was born in the 1930s, following the request of two Portuguese merchants (named Rodrigues and Teixeira), who wanted the precision of IWC’s deck clocks in wristwatch format for sailing. But that’s not what really matters here. The othe
Hands-on The Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller, when Haute Horlogerie meets ease of use - Monochrome Watches
Travelling is rarely a relaxed affair. There's the packing, the rushing to the airport or train station, losing your passport, finding it again, running the gauntlet through security. By the time you get to your destination you're pretty much guaranteed to be exhausted (and let's face it probably a little buzzed). The last thing you want to be doing is fiddling around trying to adjust your watch to a new time-zone. Enter the Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller, a watch as attractive as it is easy to use. When haute horlogerie meets functionalityThe Laurent Ferrier Galet Traveller is not a new watch by any stretch. After making its debut a few years ago however it has become arguably one of the most accessible and practical models in the Laurent Ferrier line-up. It's also proved popular amongst fans of the brand. So much so in fact that in 2014 the Galet Traveller Enamel, a limited edition especially made for US retailers, was launched in white and pink gold. Two years on and the Galet Trav
