A Technical Perspective - The Mighty Return of Ultra-Thin Watches
Miniaturisation has always been one of the watchmaking industry’s main objectives. With the advent of complicated watches and the development of the wristwatch, this issue became critical. Fitting multiple functions into a single movement, which has to remain wearable, requires re-imagining space. This also led to the development of ultra-thin watches, guided initially by a desire for elegance, but also in the framework of constant improvement. Popular since the 1960s but slightly forgotten during the 2000s (with the trend for large timepieces), ultra-thin watches recently made a strong comeback – a trend that has sparked open warfare between Piaget and Bvlgari – amongst others.Modern history of the ultra-thin wristwatchThe concept of the ultra-thin wristwatch is nothing new but it's Piaget and the iconic Altiplano model that bring it into the spotlight. In 1957, Piaget introduced Calibre 9P; the thinnest mechanical movement ever created, it was fitted inside a watch
Hands-on with the Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special Bronze 45mm (specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
Bronze… Not your typical material for a watch – and especially when it comes to a pilot watch. Bronze had been used several times in watchmaking but it makes more sense on a dive watch (even if, to be true, bronze remains quite an odd choice for a timepiece. We’ll get back on the reasons why later in this article). When you think bronze, you immediately?think Panerai but other brands used it (like IWC with the Aquatimer). Now it’s Zenith’s turn to introduce a watch made in this green metal. It’s a pilot watch, it’s big but it looks really cool. Here is the?Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special Bronze 45mm.The Zenith Pilot Type 20 became, among all the pilot-oriented watches, quite an icon and an easily recognizable timepiece. Even if it shares many of the classical pilot-style attributes, the Type 20 (nothing to do with the Breguet Type XX?but it’s rather link to a specific serial number of an instrument dedicated to the French Navy) has its
Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider - Hands-On Review, Price
Nivada Grenchen is one of those hidden gems of the vintage watch scene, a brand with great history and fascinating models, such as the famous Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver or the Depthmaster. Dormant for several decades, the brand has recently been revived by French entrepreneur Guillaume Laidet, who in 2019 obtained the license to use the Nivada Grenchen copyright. Following this, Laidet started to reissue some of the brand’s most glorious past models, which also included the brand’s first waterproof automatic watch, the Antarctic. Having a thing for original, daring designs, he wasn’t shy about reproducing the ultra-cool “Pacman” dials and today it’s yet another bold and unique look that is back on stage, with the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider Re-Edition.Nivada was founded in Grenchen (Granges), Switzerland in 1926 by Otto Wullimann, Hermann Schindler and Jack Schneider. The company remained under the control of the Schneider family until its 5
