Hands-on with the Moritz Grossmann Tefnut (live photos, specs & price) - Monochrome-Watches
When it comes to German Watchmaking, you probably have two main ideas in mind. The first one is military watches. The second one is something we love more here at Monochrome-Watches: classical high-end?watches. Germany has a long tradition of creating?timing instruments, especially in the city of Glashutte, with names like A. Lange & Sohne, Nomos or Glashutte Original. A fourth manufacture exists though – and not the worst one to be true. Here is their latest creation, the?Moritz Grossmann Tefnut. It seems that German watchmakers have something with the discreet elegance of an underrated timepiece that hides a superbly finished movement in its case. Whether it’s a Lange 1 or a?Senator Chronometer, watches produced in the small village of Glashutte are sharing first a unique sense of design but also?a love for the beautiful?mechanics. Another manufacture is also part of the gang, Moritz Grossmann. Their watches?all have a sleek, discreet elegance with a very traditional m
In-Depth: Angelus Instrument de Vitesse and the Pedigree of its Monopusher Movement
For watch enthusiasts like me and the rest of the team of MONO, the name Angelus is synonymous with splendid vintage chronographs. Yet, the modern side of the brand, which is under the umbrella of La Joux-Perret (and thus Citizen), was until recently fairly different. The resurrection of the brand in 2015, which was done alongside its sister brand Arnold & Son, gave birth to highly technical or contemporary-designed watches… Not entirely what we could have expected. But things have changed in the past couple of years, with the launch of the La Fabrique collection. Following the Massena LAB Chronographe Medical, Angelus recently treated us with a stunning vintage-inspired monopusher chronograph, full of charm and nostalgia, the Instrument de Vitesse. Time for us to take a closer look at this lovely watch, but also to talk about its movement… And there’s a lot to tell here.?Angelus is a name with great history and important watches. Founded in 1891 by brothers Alber
Comparative 3 Modern Worldtimer Watches from Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Montblanc - Monochrome Watches
In this day and age the worldtimer is likely to be one of the most useful complications to be found in a mechanical timepiece. When?Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian professor and philosopher of?communication theory,?wrote ‘The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man’ in 1962, not many could have foreseen how McLuhan’s description of the “Global Village” would became reality. Yet, today we live in that reality as McLuhan described, ‘the globe has been contracted into a village by electronic technology’. Hence the need to know the time in various time zones of our world, at a?glance. Of course we could focus on a pluralism of devices that indicate time in more time zones, however here on Monochrome we focus on the most beautiful mechanical timepieces, and thus we have a closer look at three recent worldtimers, from three brands, which all share a design feat, namely a world map on the dial. Here are the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Worl
Top 5 Watches from Baselworld 2016 by Frank Geelen - Monochrome Watches
After Robin and Brice?shared their personal Top 5 watches from?Baselworld 2016, it's time for my Top 5 of the most impressive watches from this year's edition of Baselworld. My choices of watches are?not exclusively focused on the most expensive or most complicated timepieces; sometimes all it takes to make a strong impression is a great looking watch for a great price. At Baselworld, it was again clear that some brands are very good in?that! Think of Frederique Constant who introduced the world's most affordable perpetual calendar, Tudor with their new (well, last year they introduced it) in-house movement that finds its way into the collection, and Meistersinger and Oris still doing great things. However I'll start my Top 5 with the watch that I finally (the wait was long) got to see in the metal' on the first day of the fair.1 – Gronefeld 1941 RemontoireThe first day of Baselworld, Wednesday, is press day and many brands do press conferences to inform members of the press abou
Review Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date
Adapting the Biblical phrase to the watchmaking sphere, it is true to say that watch lovers do not live by novelties alone. There are plenty of models out there that deserve to be admired, time after time. One of these belongs to Vacheron Constantin‘s understated yet elegant Patrimony family inspired by slim men’s wristwatches of the 1950s. The Patrimony Moon Phase and Retrograde Date appeared in 2017, a simpler model that was somewhat eclipsed by the astronomical watch Celestia with double-digit complications and the Grande Sonnerie Symphonia. Fitted with a retrograde date and a moon phase indication, the complications were not jaw-dropping, but the overall appeal and discreet elegance of the watch have given it the kind of sticking power you need to become a classic. As Brice explained in his review, the Moon Phase and Retrograde Date was a descendant of the Retrograde Day-Date with the same case, same base movement and the replacement of the day indication with a moon pha
