The Collector's Series: Koen's IWC Vintage Ingenieur - Monochrome-Watches
It is with great pleasure we welcome Koen?as a contributor?to the Monochrome-Watches team he is extremely active on the IWC forum and a truly passionate watch geek. When we first sat down on the Collector Series with Koen,?we discussed his stunning Vintage IWC Portofino. On this occasion, in a rather overcast London (no surprise there), his second instalment of the series, we discussed how his passion for IWC lead him to the glorious IWC Vintage Ingenieur.First off let’s take a look back. The first IWC Ingenieur was unveiled in 1955. It was equipped with the first bidirectional automatic movement and developed by the then Technical Director, Albert Pellaton. It wasn’t famous until the early 1970s, when a diver's helmet inspired freelance watch designer Gerald Genta (yes, that’s the same gentleman who designed the AP Royal Oak and Patek’s Nautilus.) His mission was to redesign the Ingenieur. Genta designed the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, which was launched in 1
The Auction Hammer - Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir 13 - Monochrome Watches
In the last couple of years it has become a trend; watches that the high-end brands make especially for one or more of their boutiques. Often this results in unique color combinations and very limited production. Today we found such a watch, but this one is so much more rare….??It’s a Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir Boutique Edition, but not just ?a Boutique Edition; Cartier issued this watch in 1999 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of it’s boutique in Paris! The word ‘Boutique’ is actually kind of an understatement for the Cartier Boutique, because you could better call it flagship store. The store is situated at 13 Rue de la Paix, in a building that was purchased in 1899 by Alfred Cartier. In this very building many incredible events took place; from the remounting of the famous Hope diamond to the conception of many of Cartier's now legendary watch models. Baselworld day three - Monochrome Watches
Another interesting day at Baselworld… and besides several meetings and running into some of the very best watchmakers on planet earth during a book-signing, it was also time to finally get my new MIH Watch!Today the book 12 Faces of Time was officially released with a book-signing. Elizabeth Doerr, writer, and Ralf Baumgarten, photographer, really did an excellent job. Not only is the book great, later more about that, the book-signing was one of the most interesting events during the Baselworld fair. At least for me as an admirer of independent watchmakers.12 Faces of Time is actually a piece of art about the art of watchmaking. It’s very stylish, designed beautifully and Ralf Baumgarten’s photography perfectly suit the style of the interviews. This perfect match between the style of interviews and photos is something that absolutely adds to the joy of reading this book. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
SIHH 2019 - Montblanc Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar LE100 (Specs & Price)
For the SIHH 2019, Montblanc introduces a completely revamped “Heritage” collection. Hardly a newcomer, the Heritage collection already houses models such as the Heritage Spirit Pulsograph?or the?Heritage Perpetual Calendar. The latter became the talking piece at the SIHH 2014, positioning itself at that time as the most affordable QP on the market. Having a redesigned collection is one thing, but Montblanc has decided to give this watch something extra: the brand’s first manufacture perpetual calendar movement. Meet the new?Montblanc Heritage Manufacture Perpetual Calendar LE100.Inspired by vintage Minerva watchesNo debate… the design of the new?Montblanc Heritage is vintage to the core. By looking at the rich Minerva archives (Minerva is now owned by MB), the brand resurrects some of the glorious design elements found on these watches. Restrained proportions, elegant shapes, domed dials, two-tone colour schemes, applied dots and numerals, retro-styled hands
Hands-On Review: The Tudor Black Bay 54
Black Bay, Black Bay 58 and now, Black Bay 54. Tudor continues to expand its signature dive watch collection… by reducing it again. The BB is typically a watch that lives with its times, a watch that follows the trends. When it was first presented, back in 2012, the original Black Bay Burgundy watch was in tune with the current market; vintage style in a relatively large case. But things have changed quite drastically over the years. And now that the market is asking for more reasonable diameters, the classic diver comes back… to the original diameter of the 1950s. But that Black Bay 54 remains typical Tudor; vintage style, modern features. Let’s check if it’s any good.BackgroundCompact, clean, historically relevant and yet full of modernity, the Black Bay 54 is a direct tribute to the past of the brand. In fact, it has to be seen as a modern interpretation of Tudor’s first ever Submariner watch, to be precise the Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922. A
