Hands-On - IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition "150 Years" IW377725 (Specs & Price)
IWC celebrates its 150th anniversary with a generous line-up of 27 limited editions of the brand's icons – including this popular Pilot's Watch Chronograph, also known as the ?“FliegerChronograph“. The 150 Years watch displays elapsed times against a glossy, white lacquered dial that pays tribute to the enamel dials of IWC's historic pocket watches.Flight path of IWC's pilot watchesIWC took to the skies in 1936 with the launch of its first pilot watches and eventually supplied pilots of Britain's Royal Air Force and Germany's Luftwaffe. Hallmark traits of these early cockpit allies ?-in the form of large cases, easy-to-read black dials with white numerals, luminous triangular markers at 12 o'clock and the oversized ratcheted crown to allow for manipulation when wearing gloves – have characterised the IWC's squadron of pilot watches since then. The Battle of High-End Chronographs Part 1 - Patek Philippe 5172G - Monochrome Watches
When a model is discontinued and replaced with a new reference at Patek Philippe, two things happen: the old model tends to become even juicier bait for collectors and the newcomer is subjected to intense scrutiny. In March 2019, Patek Philippe introduced the ref.5172G chronograph to replace the longstanding and much-loved ref. 5170. Fitted with the same in-house manual-winding calibre CH 29-535 PS as its predecessor, the latest member of Patek's chronograph dynasty comes in a white gold case with a de rigueur blue dial and a pronounced vintage temperament. Larger, bolder, less classic and more casual than the 5170, the 5172G is one of the contenders in our next battle of chronographs.Editor's note: this review of the Patek Philippe Chronograph 5172G is part of a series of three articles where we will compare two of the most desirable high-end, hand-wound chronographs currently on the market. Two watches with the same concept, but two different flavours. The third article, which will b
Ressence Type 3, The Oil-Filled Watch That Goes Beyond Hands - Monochrome Watches
When it comes to unique displays of the time, you probably thought you’ve already seen everything: wandering hours, chains, magnetic balls, liquid-filled capillary, rotating prisms… Same goes in terms of complications and construction?of the overall watch. Well, think again. The?Ressence Type 3 features both a highly unusual display and an almost unique construction. Certainly, the Type 3 doesn’t have the visual?flamboyance?of a MB&F, the bold high-tech design of an URWERK or the apparent complexity of a HYT. However, underneath this restrained facade?hides a watch filled with oil and which does not use hands to display the time. And that makes the?Ressence Type 3 very special to us.An oil-filled watch? A bit of backgroundSorry? How can a watch be filled with oil? The idea of filling the case of a watch with oil is not new, and not exclusive to Ressence – although admittedly this was never a popular feature… at least not until 2013, when Ressence intro
6 Cool-looking Watches with Gradient/Fume Dials // Buying Guide
What's old is new again. Gradient or “fume” (smoked) dials are back in fashion. Popular in the 1970s, forgotten for a while and brought back on the scene recently, these colourful dials stand out with lighter tones in the centre that gradually darken towards the edges. Their gradient colour gives a rich depth to the dials, creating beautiful light effects. These smoked dials are ubiquitous today but to give credit where credit is due, H. Moser & Cie. was the brand that instigated their comeback Here are six great watches with gradient dials, with options for all pockets.Louis Erard Heritage AutomatiqueLouis Erard has been working on renewing itself, with new designs, new collections and a fresher look. A Set Of Unique Ra¨²l Pages Regulateura Detente RP1s With Dials By Master Enameller Anita Porchet - Monochrome Watches
When two masters of their respective crafts meet, it’s very likely greatness will ensue. However, while masters may strengthen each other, it’s difficult to find common ground when crafts might seem at odds. Despite this, a positive and uniquely intriguing outcome is still a possibility. Such is the case with the collaboration of Ra¨²l Pages, the esteemed independent watchmaker, and Anita Porchet, a true master enamelled. Even though the two are long-time friends, it wasn’t until now that they worked on a shared project, which happens to be a uniquely coloured trio of Pages’ brilliant Regulateura Detente.Ra¨²l Pages was recently awarded the 2024 Louis Vuitton Prize for Independent Creatives, for his work on the stupendous Regulatuera Detente. Louis Vuitton is also deeply connected with the work of Anita Porchet, who has decorated many of the watches by the design house over the years.
