Hands-On - A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium Limited Edition
The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus is a surprising watch on many levels. Dubbed the ALS you can wear on a daily basis, it’s a rather Germanic take on the luxury sports watch, with a different approach to the concept than, for instance, the Royal Oak, Nautilus or Overseas. More complex, less integrated, not that thin… far less Genta-esque, in fact. It truly has its own personality and, even though it came as a surprise in 2019, it has become a success for the brand. Building on its popularity, the Saxon brand decided to release its first limited edition (as if the regular steel version was easy to get!), the Odysseus Titanium. And yes, it is a stunning watch on many levels. Probably the best of the collection so far. But it’s also a watch that has provoked comments. The A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus, as presented in 2019It might sound a bit cliche to start this article by already saying that the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus Titanium is a stunning watch. Truth is, this w
Hands-on - A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, the hidden gem - Monochrome Watches
Saxony has been a fertile ground for some of the most remarkable horological innovations. The Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar with its impressive technique and perfect craftsmanship is in perfect keeping with the A. Lange & Sohne great tradition. Introduced in 2013, this masterpiece is now presented in discreet white gold with an exquisite grey dial.Presented?over 20 years ago?(in 1994, at the same time the brand was relaunched), the Lange 1 has turned into an icon and the cornerstone of an amazing watch family comprising over 10 models. Among these, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar combines two of the most prestigious complications. The distinctive asymmetric layout and patented outsized date, the clear arrangement of the calendar and complication indications that are not overlapping each other are unmistakably Lange & Sohne. Rather than being exposed, the fascinating ballet of its tourbillon is visible only through the case back: no need to show off, Lange &
IWC Big Pilot Constant Force Tourbillon AMG One Owners IW590502
About a week ago, Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division released its most advanced, crazily complex, powerful hypercar ever. We’ve often heard of the concept of “race car for the road” or brands applying F1 technology to sports cars. That concept has never been pushed as far as the new Mercedes-AMG One, which is powered by almost the same engine as Lewis’ F1 car, the hybrid 1.6-litre turbo V6 used in the 2016 Mercedes F1 W07… And the car will be built in the UK, in the same facilities as current MB F1 cars. So, when it comes to car-watch pairing and aware of the partnership between IWC and AMG, which watch can you possibly offer to the owners of this USD 2 million car? You certainly cannot go for a simple time-only. So, you create the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition AMG One Owners IW590502.?In short, this Mercedes-AMG One is probably the most advanced and most F1-derived road car ever imagined. The engine… straight out of a
First Look: The Louis Moinet Speed of Sound with Valjoux 88
With Jean-Marie Schaller at the helm, Louis Moinet navigates the seas of haute horlogerie with a distinctive style marked by its impressively staged mechanical movements, exotic materials and flamboyant styling. Louis Moinet's latest port of call will appeal to fans of the legendary Valjoux 88 calibre, brought back to life onboard the Speed of Sound. As the brand whose founding father invented one of the very first chronographs in 1815 – the Compteur de Tierces – it is a fitting way to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The Louis Moinet Speed of Sound is a chronograph with moon phases and a telemeter scale designed to measure the distance from an event that emits light and sound powered by a modified and embellished Valjoux calibre 88. Not the most common kind of scale found on chronographs, the telemeter scale was a vital instrument for yesteryear soldiers to calculate the firing range in battle; today, telemeters can be used to calculate the distance of a storm based on the t
Interview - Mike Horn, Explorer & Panerai Ambassador, during SIHH 2019
Sometimes in life one is privileged enough to have an interaction which inspires so deeply, it forces you to question your personal output to its deepest level. I was fortunate enough to have one of these, last week in Geneva, with Mike Horn. For those unfamiliar with the man, Mike is a record-setting explorer, sailor and environmentalist, originally from South Africa, and now living in Switzerland.?Without recounting each and every one of his epic journeys, a few need to be celebrated: he has sailed around the world 14 times in the last ten years; he swam the Amazon River solo and has circumnavigated the globe unassisted; he walked to the North Pole during the dark season (more people have been to the Moon) and has scaled the world's 8,000-metre peaks, including a recent attempt to paraglide K2. But most importantly, Mike is a tremendously energetic, charismatic, friendly gentleman. We sat down to discuss his upbringing, his passion for the wild, his drive to push the limits, and of c
