Tempus Fugit and Swatch exhibition in Cite du Temps in Geneva - Monochrome Watches
Two weeks ago we told you about an art exhibition in Geneva. Not just an art exhibition, because there are probably many in the city of Geneva, but one related to watchmaking. Graffiti artist?Magaldi Xavier exhibited his interpretation of mechanical movements?in the Cite du Temps. The exhibition of Magaldi Xavier has ended, but a visit to the Cite du Temps might still be a good idea… Tom Hanx, one of our valued readers, went there, wrote a report and made a lot of photos. Not only from the graffiti art, but also from some very rare vintage Swatch models. Ad - Scroll to continue with article Cite Du Temps (City of Time) is a unique building in the heart of Geneva, a stone’s throw from the lake and overlooking the Jet d’Eau. Being in the middle of a bridge right where the river Rhone begins its journey from Lake Geneva, the building is also the v
Cartier Santos-Dumont XL Limited Edition 2021 CRW2SA0025 Hands-On
Cartier has a keen sense for elegant, original and effortless watch designs. Among the many shapes and designs, one of the most emblematic watches is the Santos, generally acknowledged as the oldest men's wristwatch. Over the years, the collection has evolved along sportier and bolder lines, well-represented by these recent models. However, in 2020, the Parisian brand reintroduced the original design of the iconic Santos-Dumont model with its typical dandy flair in an XL size with a hand-wound movement. Along with the permanent collection, Cartier also launched limited edition watches inspired by Alberto Santos-Dumont’s flying machines, which were pretty well received. For 2021, there’s a new pair of Cartier Santos-Dumont XL Limited Edition watches, including this handsome two-tone watch that we’ll be looking at today.?BackgroundThe Santos watch is one of Cartier’s oldest collections and one entirely dedicated to men. The collection is named after Brazilian avia
Van Cleef & Arpels' Stephanie Rault Explains The Brand's Approach To Watchmaking
Each year, during the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (or in short, the GPHG), one brand always stands out because it wins so many awards: Van Cleef & Arpels. It might not have been the name you expected; however, if you look at the sheer number of awards it has won over the years, it is more than impressive (three in the 2024 GPHG alone). While we have scarcely covered the typical high jewellery watches from Van Cleef & Arpels, the opening of a new boutique in Amsterdam was the perfect moment to learn more about the brand. For this, I turned to Stephanie Rault, European President of the Maison, to hear about Van Cleef & Arpels' watches and future plans.Van Cleef and Arpels Lady Arpels PlanetariumFrank Geelen, MONOCHROME – I mainly know Van Cleef & Arpels as a jewellery brand. If it wasn’t for the numerous prizes Van Cleef & Arpels has won or the rather spectacular Midnight Planetarium and the Lady Arpels Planetarium, both in collaboration with C
Weekly Watch Photo - Vintage Omega Watches - Monochrome Watches
Another start of the week with our Weekly Watch Photo and today we’ll show you just how incredibly beautiful vintage Omega watches can be. Last week we showed you photos,?made by Etienne Malec, of a vintage LIP. Well, Etienne sent us some more photos and we think they are simply brilliant. Of course, the watches shown in the photos are very beautiful, but we also think that the way they are displayed adds to our desire to own one, to wear one. However these vintage beauties are not available anymore at a authorized retailer, so please enjoy the photos and after that we wish you “happy hunting.”The vintage Omega chronograph (shown above) is from 1957 and features the same movement that can be found in the vintage Omega Speedmaster shown below. That movement, a caliber 321, was developed by Albert Piguet of a company called Lemania, a well known movement manufacture that had been acquired in 1932 by Omega’s parent company (SSIH). Caliber 321 was used in the Speedm
In-Depth: A Closer Look at Laurent Ferrier's Natural Escapement
Today, for our latest in-depth video, we’re going technical. This is what MONOCHROME is all about, after all. Sharing the knowledge behind fine horology and understanding how our beloved mechanical watches actually work. Today’s topic is one dear to our hearts, as it combines everything we love in fine watchmaking: high-end finishing, mechanical ingenuity, profound historical references and a complex mechanical device that aims to enhance precision. It is time for us to dive into one of the most spectacular movements currently in production, Laurent Ferrier‘s micro-rotor calibre, and to understand how its natural escapement works.?Horology 101 – What is an escapement? Before we even approach the concept of the natural escapement, we need a concise reminder about the escapement itself. What is the role of the escapement in a watch? The escapement is one of the most critical parts of a watch, the brain of the movement, or its heart, as some might say. It is the dev
