The return of the historic A. Lange & Sohne Centennial Tourbillon
A. Lange & Sohne is renowned as one of the most distinguished watchmakers from Saxony on the market today, but life hasn’t always been smooth sailing. As a witness and victim of the vicissitudes of German history over the past two centuries, the destiny of the brand has come full circle. From its foundation in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolf Lange in Glashutte to its destruction during WWII, and from its expropriation after the war to its miraculous resurrection after Germany’s reunification in 1990 by the founder’s great-grandson, A. Lange & Sohne has taken a circuitous path but is now safely home. Today, A. Lange & Sohne is celebrating another return, this time marked by the return of a valuable pocket watch that was lost in the turmoil following WWII to its rightful place in the Museum Bautzen.Known as the “Centennial Tourbillon”, this exquisite gold pocket watch with a miniature enamel painting of the goddess Minerva was one of only a few tourbillo
Hands-On: Impressions about the Omega Speedmaster Pilot Flight Qualified
About a month ago, out of the blue, Omega released a new, rather polarizing and unique-looking version of its emblematic chronograph, the Speedmaster Pilot Flight Qualified.?Well, it wasn’t really out of the blue, but we’ll come back on that in a few. Colourful, tool-oriented and with a dial full of references to the world of aviation, it is a watch with a completely different style from what we’ve come to expect from the streamlined Moonwatch – it’s also very different technically. We had the chance to get our hands on one of these Speedmaster Pilot watches and I’m going to share some of my impressions… Is it oddly cool or just odd? Let’s find out.BackgroundThe Speedmaster started life in 1957 as a racing chronograph to measure average speeds and also introduced the concept of the external bezel with a? tachymeter scale, hence its name, to the watchmaking world. However, it quickly changed vocation during the 1960s to become the watch of

Hands-On Oris Oris Big Crown Pointer Date 36mm Bronze (Specs & Price)
It's no secret that smaller case sizes are back in a big way, which is something we're pretty pleased about here at MONOCHROME. A particular favourite is the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze?(also available in steel), which was introduced at Baselworld last month and boasts a gorgeous bronze case that measures just 36mm. This model came as somewhat of a surprise to us and so we were quite keen to see how this smaller diameter would wear on the wrist. Suffice to say we were not disappointed.Oris has a well-documented history in the world of aviation, having made its first pilot's pocket watch in the early 1910s. This was followed by the company's first pilot's wristwatch in 1917, and eventually the creation of the Oris Big Crown in 1938, which, as the name suggests, featured an oversized crown so that gloved airmen could adjust their watches quickly and easily.
