Video: The Ulysse Nardin Freak, the watch that broke all conventions
The other day, we went to Switzerland to film one of the most important and influential watchmakers of the last few decades. It’s not a name that is on everyone’s tongue, but it actually should. Let’s look at this objectively… A watchmaker who created the most complex astronomical watches in times when computer-aided designing and calculations were not widely available. A watchmaker who created a watch that is like no other, that indicates hours with a main spring barrel that rotates once per 12 hours and the entire calibre is an in-line movement that hovers over the main spring barrel and rotates once every hour. However, it is important to mention that the latter was the very first watch to use silicon in its escapement. I’m talking about Ludwig Oechslin and the Ulysse Nardin Freak. Now I could go on about Ulysse Nardin’s Trilogy of Time, however, we didn’t go to film those masterpieces. Yes, these three watches (hence the trilogy) were incred
Hands-on with the new Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours - Monochrome Watches
Montblanc comes with a new variation on the iconic Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, with an absolutely brilliant way to indicate time. The hour indication is not just a 12-hour indication, it immediately makes clear wether it’s day or night.I guess it’s safe to assume that you know the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec by now and if not, please check out the review that I did (click here). A perfect all-round timepiece with an almost excessive amount of class and elegance. And more-over it really is an all-round timepiece, as it tells hours, minutes, day/night, day of the week, date and has a mono-pusher chronograph! In this case it is the new caliber MB R220, but more about that later on. When looking at the Rieus
Nomos Tangente Neomatik 41 Update Midnight Blue - Monochrome Watches
However restrained the designs for Nomos might be, that doesn't mean the watches are any less interesting from a technical perspective. While it might not be to everyone's liking, the clean, Bauhaus-inspired watches are simple, elegant and more often than not, quite handsome to look at. And combining the design skills to determine when enough is enough with traditional watchmaking capabilities, Nomos has a pretty interesting range of watches on offer. A case in point is one of this year's novelties: the Nomos Tangente Neomatik 41 Update Midnight Blue. The Tangente Neomatik features all the elements of previous Nomos models but mixes in a little playful touch for a bit of diversity. Consider it a greatest hits album by your favourite band, with a new song included as a bonus. The latest iteration of the Tangente Neomatik was presented during this year's digital version of the Watches & Wonders fair. Ad - Scroll to continue with article
Introducing the Andreas Strehler Papillon d'Or - Monochrome-Watches
In the world of independent watchmaking, there are the big names, such as MB&F, Richard Mille or Urwerk and there are the confidential manufactures, like Kari Voutilainen, Gronefeld or Sarpaneva. One of them has to be seen as extremely exclusive, first because of the very limited production figures?but also because of the unique beauty of his watches. His name is Andreas Strehler and?his latest creation is the?Papillon d’Or.Andreas Strehler is?a name that only a few?of you might know. Only a very limited number of hardcore collectors are aware of his own brand and creations. However, his work is also known from a larger audience, as he is responsible for the development of several superb timepieces, such as the Harry Winston Opus 7, the Maurice Lacroix Chronograph with an in-house calibre, the Maitre du Temps Chapter Three?or several H. Moser & Cie movements – he participated to the development of the H. Moser & Cie Perpetual Calendar. Ad - Scroll to
