Brice Goulard's Top 10 of the SIHH 2017
First one to pull the trigger was Xavier, with his Top 10 watches of the SIHH 2017. It was not fair to leave that task to him only, so I had to do the job too. Still, picking up my 10 favorite pieces of the Geneva-based fair was not easy. Not that there was not enough material this year – we’ve seen many interesting propositions, both dream-watches or more commercial offers – but it’s always difficult to set barriers. Whatever, here they are, my 10 favorite watches of the SIHH 2017 (plus a few special mentions, some watches or policies dear to my heat…)A. Lange & Sohne Zeitwerk Decimal StrikeOne thing to know about me: I’m a fan of A. Lange & Sohne and inside their collection, I love the Zeitwerk Striking Time, as you can see in the review I did. I love this watch for being at the same time faithful to Lange’s codes and totally out of this world (display, complications, way it strikes the time…) Nothing is usual and surprisingly,
Weekly Watch Photo: The Arnold and Son Collection - Monochrome-Watches
In the past year?we have covered Arnold and Son quite often. And with good reason, because they have unveiled a lot of impressive novelties. In our article about the new?UTTE Tourbillon?we even started with “Yet another novelty from Arnold & Son!” and?we explained that we were rather impressed by Arnold & Son. For our Weekly Watch Photo we asked several of our befriended brand for some summer photos, and of course we also asked Arnold & Son. They work together with Watch-Anish?for their (superb) photos and we get to present you even more of their collection…What is truly interesting with Arnold and Son is the number and the complexity of the watches in collection. And even if the brand is quite new and is not a proper manufacture (meaning an integrated structure with R&D, conception and fabrication in the same entity), they never hide the fact that all the movements were?coming from the highly qualified manufacture La Joux-Perret. And another very inte
The new Chopard L.U.C Quattro - Monochrome Watches
As part of its Baselworld 2019 collection, Chopard presents the latest livery for its L.U.C Quattro. Still equipped with its formidable, ultra-slim, four-barrelled engine, the changes are limited exclusively to the dial. Housed in a white gold case, the dial displays a discreet grey colour in line with the brand's pursuit of the restrained and tasteful aesthetics one might associate with English gentlemen'. English or not, the choice of case material and the colour and finish of the dial go a long way in tempering the personality of this distinguished member of the high-end L.U.C family.Evolution of an iconIntroduced in 2000, the L.U.C Quattro proved that elegance need not be jeopardized by power. Packing four mainspring barrels for a colossal 9-day power reserve into a movement would usually result in a hulking, thick case, but the first L.U.C Quattro surprised us with its restrained 36mm diameter and ultra-slim movement measuring just 3.70mm thick. Last year, the dial of the L.U.C Qu
Introducing The Petermann Bedat Reference 2941 Split-Seconds (Live Pics)
Ga?l Petermann and Florian Bedat created their independent watchmaking brand in 2017. In 2020, the dynamic duo of talented young watchmakers received a well-deserved industry accolade, taking home the Horological Revelation Prize at the prestigious GPHG for their superbly crafted 1967 Deadbeat Seconds. Petermann Bedat now moves one step further into complexity and high-end watchmaking with a magnificent monopusher split-seconds chronograph with a jumping minute counter. Meet the Petermann Bedat Reference 2941.If the 1967 Deadbeat Seconds was already fairly complex, Ga?l Petermann and Florian Bedat have not chosen an easy road for their second movement. The rattrapante (or split-seconds) chronograph is widely considered to be one of the most elaborate and difficult to produce complications in mechanical watchmaking. Rattrapante chronographs feature two superimposed seconds hands that time two events of different lengths simultaneously. One hand (the rattrapante) can be stopped to read a
Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G (Price)
Although many were hoping that the demise of the Nautilus 5711 was just a marketing ploy – which it wasn’t – Patek Philippe had a couple of surprises up its sleeve, including the new Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G. And new in this context means brand new, not just a new dial colour/finishing as in the case of the Chronograph 5172G or the Worldtimers. This highly practical combination of an annual calendar with a GMT function marks the first time these two complications appear in one watch at Patek Philippe. Powered by a movement protected by eight patents, the Annual Calendar Travel Time 5326G synchronises the date with the time zone selected. Although long-time collectors of Patek watches might have been floored by its overtly vintage vibe, unusual granular dial, modular case construction and more casual presence, we fell in love with the watch. Firstly, for its impressive level of practicality and secondly, for its refreshing design, a clear signal of the new dir
