Five watches presented this year that shows it's hip to be square
Heuy Lewis & The News sang “It’s Hip To Be Square” in their hit song from 1986 and in watches, you could kind of say the same. Amongst watches, square ones always tend to stand out a bit more, and few have even stood the test of time and earned the status of horological icon. Watches like the TAG Heuer Monaco or Cartier Santos need little introduction, really. But more recent offerings tend to tap into the same group of possible clientele that’s into square-shaped watches. And to be honest, I have two on my personal wishlist as well. there’s just something unique about having a square watch on the wrist. So with that in mind, we’re taking a closer look at 5 new watches with a square(-ish) case!TAG Heuer Monaco Purple EditionArguably one of the most famous square watches available, the TAG Heuer Monaco has become an icon thanks to a brilliant marketing ploy by Jack Heuer, using the Monaco Grand Prix and Steve McQueen to make it beyond cool. Many i
Introducing 2021 Longines DolceVita Automatic Art-Deco Sector Dial
To be fair, the Longines DolceVita has never been the most appealing watch of the brand. Sure, it is elegant and certainly well executed, but its rectangular case and “Cartier-esque” dials could never really compete with the attractiveness of the Heritage collection. It is one of those collections that is simply overlooked by the watch community. However, without entirely changing the recipe, the winged hourglass brand has just launched a new edition that might change the situation. Here’s the 2021 Longines DolceVita Automatic with a cool Art Deco Sector Dial.?As mentioned, the DolceVita is a collection that doesn’t attract much attention and is often overlooked – apart from being one of the watches worn by French President Macron. Till today, most of the models were equipped with highly traditional “flinque” dials – a machine-applied process that looks like guilloche – and Roman numerals. Maybe a bit too shy and too classic.
Introducing: The New Bulgari Serpenti Pallini High-Jewellery Collection
It’s fair to say that Bulgari's ultra-thin Octo Finissimo watches have stolen the limelight for the past decade. However, Bulgari's laurels have rested for decades on its fabulous and creative high-jewellery watches, spearheaded by the brand's mascot, the Serpenti. Decked with fabulous gemstones, flexible Tubogas straps or whirling with tourbillons, Bulgari's Serpenti has countless guises. A new trilogy of Serpenti Pallini jewellery watches powered by Bulgari's miniature Piccolissimo calibre form part of the brand’s novelties unveiled during Geneva Watch Days. Bulgari's theme this year is sound, and the rare en tremblant setting of the tiny gold beads and diamonds that quiver with the slightest movement generate tiny vibrations.Bulgari's first Serpenti watch appeared in the late 1940s with a tubular coiling Tubogas bracelet. From the mid-1950s on, the Serpenti took on more realistic features, and the dial was hidden under a hinged cover on the snake's head. The muse for the
Claude Sfeir, Philippe Dufour's Partner: How the 20th-Anniversary Simplicity will be Allocated (Spoiler, It's a Lottery) - Monochrome Watches
A few weeks ago, a Philippe Dufour Simplicity “20th Anniversary” was the highlight of the Phillips “Retrospective 2000-2020” Geneva auction. The watch – marked 00/20 – hammered for over CHF 1.3 million. Admittedly, Philippe Dufour is one of the most respected craftsmen of the industry, and his watches are regarded as the ultimate expression of traditional hand-finishing. The story doesn't end here, though. The introduction of the anniversary Simplicity watch was initiated with Claude Sfeir. One of the world's foremost watch collectors, a long-time friend and supporter of Philippe Dufour, Claude Sfeir is now his commercial partner. Believe it or not, since the news broke Sfeir received over 10,000 emails from potential buyers interested in acquiring one of the 20 limited-edition anniversary Simplicity watches. Ten have been allocated already, and the remaining ten will be distributed following a random draw (more information below). Like many notable
Interview - Davide Cerrato of Montblanc On The Brand and What's Coming Next
We're in Switzerland quite often – according to my wife, who keeps track, I've spent a quarter of last year in the land of watchmaking. Whether for the videos that we make, or events organised by watch brands, or manufacture visits, or the GPHG award night, it always means you're meeting a lot of people from the watch industry and the opportunity of running into friends. Recently I met with my good friend Davide Cerrato, Managing Director Of Montblanc Watch Division, and we talked about how things are at Montblanc, what's going to happen at Goodwood and more.Davide Cerrato, Managing Director Of Montblanc Watch DivisionHere's a recap of the talk we had, just outside the EPHJ, seated on a bench in the sun. The weather was great, birds were singing and it was nice to run into Davide and have the opportunity to get an update of how things have been going since we last saw one another in January at the SIHH (in this video interview).Frank Geelen (FG): In January, Montblanc presented i
