Interview - Talking To Remi Maillat, The Man Behind Krayon Watches
Independent watchmaker Krayon was created a few years ago by Remi Maillat. Besides his developments behind the scene for other brands, Krayon made a remarkable debut with the mindbogglingly complex Everywhere, the first mechanical watch able to compute the sunrise and sunset times everywhere on the globe. This impressive world-first earned Krayon a well-deserved accolade at the GPHG 2018 with the Innovation Prize. Maillat sits at an interesting intersection at watchmaking. His watches are classic and, at the same time, profoundly modern and innovative. On the occasion of a visit to Krayon's new facilities in Neuchatel, we sat for a talk with the independent watchmaker to better understand his work.Xavier Markl, MONOCHROME – How did you become hooked on watchmaking? Buying Guide: Six Watches That Confirm Green Is Here To Stay
We often talk about trends in watches, as designs, materials and colours regularly follow the preferences of the public. Sometimes, though, these trends phase out very slowly or not at all. And when it comes to colour, that’s always a very enjoyable topic of debate. Take blue, for instance, which was at one point ‘the new black’. One of the more recent on-trend colours that seems to stand the test of time, almost unaffected, is green. We’ve touched upon the topic before, but it shows no signs of blowing over any time soon. And with watches like the Chopard L.U.C. XPS Forest Green, Blancpain Air Command 36mm Green and a few others, nobody’s complaining!Blancpain Air Command 36mm GreenWhile previously we included the 42mm model and its 5Hz frequency, we turn to the more compact 36mm edition of the Blancpain Air Command instead. Being smaller in size does not mean it’s any less attractive to look at. Quite the opposite, as the 36.2mm wide grade 23 titan
Introducing The IWC Pilot Chronograph 41 Gold & Green IW388110
While the focus of this year for IWC is, undoubtedly, the return of the Genta-styled Ingenieur watch, relaunched with great fanfare in 4 different editions (including a handsome, yet costly titanium model), there is, of course, more to expect from the Schaffhausen brand.?You secretive little thing, IWC…! We’ve recently presented the new green, steel case Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar. It seems that the green theme goes on again, with the launch of a luxurious edition of the classic Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41, now dressed in an audacious combination of green and rose gold.?No major surprises here. Despite its bold character, due to an usual combination of colours, this luxurious edition of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 relies on the same specifications as the steel counterpart introduced back in 2021, which was itself released first with a green dial (alongside a blue dial version, later followed by a classic black model). This means; a relatively compact cas
The Collector's Series - David Brailsford and his Peter Roberts Concentrique Grand Complication 5 - Monochrome-Watches
This week, on the Collector's Series, we discover what it's like to own a watch that, when released, was the first wristwatch to have all five hands all mounted on the same central axis. This unusual watch is called the Concentrique Grand Complication 5 and is the work of one of the greatest British watchmakers, Peter Roberts. Fitted with a superbly finished Valjoux 88?as a base, it boasts many complications, something that its owner, David from Garrick Watches, knows how to appreciate. And as usual, there is a story behind a watch, and here is David's.Peter Roberts is one of the great veterans of British Watchmaking. He has spent 45 years in the business having been the the first British student to attend the Swiss WOSTEP course (the Watches Of Switzerland Training and Education Program, which was founded in 1966 and is considered the basis for modern education in horology for professional watchmakers). ?He has worked at IWC, , and more recently, British watch brand Bremont.
