Introducing: The Surprising New 34mm Diameter of the A. Lange & Sohne 1815
The name of A. Lange & Sohne‘s 1815 watch family refers to the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange was born, the founder of precision watchmaking in Glashutte, Germany. Inspired by F.A. Lange's pocket watches, all 1815 models are hand-wound and feature classical details like the peripheral railway-track minutes scale. One of the most traditional, understated yet refined references is the 1815 time-only model. Today, the brand unveils a surprisingly small 34mm edition of the 1815, making it the most compact version of the 1815 in its 30-year history. While the diameter has been reduced, the new movement has a robust power reserve. While the 1815 has popped up in different metals and different coloured dials since its debut in 1995, the case size fluctuated from its original 36mm to 40mm in 2009 and settled down to a mid-sized case of 38.5mm diameter in 2014. SIHH 2017 - A. Lange & Sohne Lange 31 White Gold / Grey Dial (Price)
When it comes to?power reserves, you probably thought that the 7-day IWC’s or the 8-day Panerai’s were already massively powerful – and obviously, they have more power than 99% of the mechanical watches produced. Well, if power is your thing and you simply hate winding your?watch, you might want?to consider the Lange 31.?Keep in mind the ’31’ does not refer to?the diameter of the watch but rather?the length of its?power reserve…in days. Yes, this watch can run for 31 days, from a?single barrel, when fully wound. Impressive, right? This powerful watch comes in a new version for SIHH 2017, in white gold with a grey dial. When it first debuted in 2007 the?A. Lange & Sohne Lange 31 was the wristwatch with the longest power reserve available, and the first watch to have 31-days / 744hrs of energy stored in a single movement. Although?some others achieved a massive 50-day / 1,200h power reserve (Hublot with their MP-05 LaFerrari) this?was only because t
A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Timezone - a Personal Story pt. 2 - Monochrome Watches
A few weeks ago we published the first part of my personal story with A. Lange & Sohne. To me, this brand has played an important role in the past one-and-a-half decade of watch collecting, learning about mechanical watches and making Monochrome into what it is today. After that memorable weekend back in 2007, there was another memorable weekend. Another weekend that was important for me, and for Monochrome, and again the Lange 1 Timezone had a prominent role.?That second memorable weekend was only a few years ago, in 2013, when I was invited to spent a few days with A. Lange & Sohne at Lake Como, in Northern Italy. I had just quit my job as policy advisor of the Minister of Transport, to start doing Monochrome full-time – until than I (somehow) managed to run Monochrome in my spare time, during evenings, weekends, and holidays. That was a?big step for me, and for the website!?It was in May and the weather was so-so, a bit of rain, some cold winds, and when the sun broke
